Since we’re all protesting something these days, how about a shout out to the folks who knew what was REALLY important to protest? Yep, I’m talkin’ about the Whiskey Rebellion of 1794.

Because what is better than Guns and Titties ? Guns and Titties and WHISKEY!

Cum join T-Bag and Titty Whiskers for a super-fun, super-flat, shiggy-free Beerthday trail on Sunday February 19 at 2pm at Guntown Beer in historic Canonsburg, PA.

Trail is A-A, no hash cash – all trail and circle beer will be provided. There will be chocolate. There will be whiskey.

Other sustenance is available at the bar after (pre-orders appreciated).

Change of shoes are probably a good idea, as circle will be inside because I’m not freezing my ass off on my birthday any more than I have to. Hazmat suits are optional. I mean, think of all the things you could do if you grew a third arm?

Still not sure about making that tough 25 minute drive south of dahn tahn along scenic I-79? Here’s a little history to whet your appetite…

So in those early days of our great nation (before we had to make it great again!), good ol’ GW (a distiller himself) and some Hamilton dude had good intentions to generate revenue to decrease the national debt by imposing a tax on distilled spirits. Well… they apparently weren’t in touch with the locals as whiskey wasn’t some cinnamon flavored syrup that hip young colonials swilled with the hopes of loosening up stays and petticoats… whiskey wasn’t a lovely and complex amber nectar that was sipped from glencairn glasses in fancy whiskey bars… No, sir. “American whiskey started its life as a raw, unaged spirit that had, as its main attribute, the power to spur the courage of the first colonists.” And hence… Whiskey was power, er at least, money … it was often used as a medium of trade by the farmers who distilled it in lieu of having actual cash -but… well they couldn’t pay these new taxes with a few bottles of ‘shine so … yeah… they were a little peeved.

Well, in the heart of what is now known as Washington (warsh-ing-tin; wush-in-tun) County, rebels gathered at the Black Horse Tavern (subsequently known as the Birthplace of the Whiskey Rebellion) , in a little town established in 1791 by George Washington’s very own rent collector, John Canon. Well, as you know… things got a little hairy (well, tar and feathery to be exact…;), GW sent some troops to put those boys back in line, but the rebels were smart enough to head back home before anyone else got hurt and just refused to pay the tax, inspiring future tax evaders Willie, Martha, Al and Leona. The rebellion ultimately divided the nation and is considered by many to be partly responsible for the formation of political parties. Which might be what drove Tommy J to repeal the whiskey tax in 1801…

Anyways… about a year after that lovely nectar could once again flow freely across our new democracy, Canonsburg Borough was officially incorporated by Governor Thomas McKean on Feb 22, 1802. Since those early days of spirited rebellion, Canonsburg (aka Guntown) hasn’t abandoned its illustrious beginnings. In the early to mid-1900’s it was called the “Most Radioactive Town in America” due to very lucrative radium and uranium refining mills. It has spawned celebrities including Perry Como, Bobby Vinton, Wiz Khalifa and (of course) Bill Schmidt, the last USA Olympian to win a medal in the javelin throw back in 1972. Today Canonsburg is home to the 2nd largest 4th of July Parade in the state as well as to the famous Sarris Candies, where you should definitely plan to stop before or after trail to have one of their crazy delicious milk shakes (the sundae’s are enormous-you’ve been warned) – and peruse their Willy Wonka-esque candy shop with all sorts of chocolates and candies and weirdly expensive stuffed animals.
